I feel very sorry for Richard, I really do!
He wants to tell us all that God doesn't exist. He really wants to shout it from the rooftops. But his scientific training prevents him.
I am sure you all think he shouts loud enough as it is, but, the chapter in the book is called "why there almost certainly isn't a God"
It might carry more weight if it was more of a definitive statement, but poor RD is trapped by the fact that there exists no definitive proof that God doesn;t exist. And any decent scientist needs definitive proof. It;s like saying there is no cure for smallpox. At one point you could have said it. But then they discovered it, scientifically. So scientists are careful about making definitive statements.
But to be as certain as he is, it must be galling not to be able to just say: "There is no God!"
But like the cure for smallpox, God could be just around the corner.
Well let's hope so, because we could do with some help couldn't we?
Science, sadly has not cured the world's ills. Science hasn't even cured all the world's diseases!
Don't get me wrong. I am in favour of science. I am in favour of learning and understanding creation. I just think the "New Aetheists" miss the point.
Science is just, well science. It hasn't cured society's ills because it CANNOT cure society's ills!
People will tell you that God is on the run, losing ground, that Church attendance is at its lowest ebb in over 50 years. fewer and fewer people profess to believe, and fewer and fewer people profess to practice. And society gets worse and worse.
Anyone else see the parallel?
In the decade from 1998-2008 the western world worshiped the twin Gods of science and money. And society got worse.
I do hope society might give worshiping God a try again soon.
